Do I need a Visitor visa or an ETA?

Holders of eligible passports (such as the US, UK, Canada, Japan and Singapore) can use the quicker ETA for stays of up to three months. Everyone else — or anyone who wants to stay longer — applies for the Visitor visa. EU passport holders can also use the free eVisitor.

Which stream should I apply for?

The Tourist stream for holidays, family visits and short courses; the Business Visitor stream for meetings, conferences and negotiations. Neither allows paid work.

What documents do I need?

Your passport and a recent photo, plus proof you can fund your stay (such as bank statements), evidence of ties at home (a job, studies or family), and your travel plans. Business visitors add a letter from their employer.

Will I need biometrics or a medical check?

Applicants from some countries are asked to give fingerprints and a photo at an Australian visa centre, and a health examination may be requested depending on your age, health and length of stay. We tell you if your application needs either.

How long does the Visitor visa take?

Processing times vary by country and season, and the Department of Home Affairs may ask for more information. Apply at least four to six weeks before you travel.

How long can I stay in Australia?

Up to 3, 6 or 12 months. The Department decides the length of stay and whether the visa allows one or several entries, and shows both on your grant letter.

Can I extend my Visitor visa?

A Visitor visa is not extended. To stay longer you apply for a new visa before yours ends — unless your visa carries condition 8503 (No further stay), which rules this out.

Can I work or study on a Visitor visa?

You can’t work. You can study or train for up to three months in total.
