How To Apply

1) Gather all your documents. These will vary depending on the type of visa you are applying for. If you are seeking a tourist visa, these will include things like your passport, travel itinerary and proof that you have enough money to sustain yourself while in Canada. Suppose you are applying for a work or study permit. In that case, they will include official transcripts from your university, a letter of employment and proof that you have enough funds to cover living expenses while studying in Canada.

2) Find out what kind of visa you need: There are two main types of visas available - visitor visas and temporary resident visas. A visitor visa allows someone to visit Canada temporarily with some limitations. A temporary resident visa is valid for a specific period and allows someone to stay in Canada more freely than a visitor visa holder. You can apply for a temporary resident visa if you visit Canada at least once every six months.

3) Select the right service provider: It is not possible to apply directly at the Canadian embassy or consulate abroad; this should be done through one of its designated visa processing centres (VPC). It may take some time before an appointment becomes available, so this process must begin as soon as possible.

4) Visit the website of CIC here to find out where your nearest VPC is located and how long the application process takes. Appointments are given on a first-come, first-served basis, so make sure to book yours early. Once you've selected your preferred centre, click 'Get Started' and follow the instructions.

5) The questionnaire will help determine the type of visa required, so complete it carefully and truthfully. Remember to pay attention to the date requirements (if any), including ensuring that your passport expires after your visa expires. Be aware that as part of the process, your fingerprints may be taken electronically or physically, depending on which site you choose to do this step.

6) Make sure to bring photo identification and something to write with because you will be asked to fill out various forms. Please let the person dealing with your case know as soon as possible. The immigration officer who deals with your case will assess whether you qualify for a visa based on the information provided and then send the file back for decision-making.

7) You will receive a permanent residency card by mail within 15 business days if approved. It's also worth noting that any dependents under 18 years old must be included in the application. They must also provide their own set of original IDs, birth certificates and marriage certificates (if applicable). These must be translated into English if they still need to be. There is no option to renew a temporary residence visa in Canada, so if you require a longer-term stay, it's best to start the application process for a new one before your current one expires.
