Lithuania is a country in Northern Europe with a population of just over two million. It is one of the Baltic states, located between Latvia to the north and Belarus to the east. The capital and largest city is Vilnius. Lithuania has a long and tumultuous history, marked by invasions by the Russian Empire, Nazi Germany and Soviet Union. In 1991, Lithuania peacefully regained its independence after decades of Soviet rule. Since then, it has been striving to build a democratic society based on principles such as market economy, human rights and non-interference in other countries' affairs.
Lithuania's economy is focused on services and small businesses. Its main exports are electrical machinery and equipment, wood products, dairy products and textiles. The country's main imports are foodstuffs, vehicles and chemicals. Lithuania is currently ranked 27th in the World Economic Forum's Global Competitiveness Index.
