Portugal Visa Process

When planning your trip to Portugal, obtain a visa in advance. To apply for a Portuguese visa, you will need the following:

  • A passport valid for at least six months after the proposed date of your stay in Portugal.
  • Your passport photo.
  • Two copies of your recent passport page with visa stamps, if applicable.
  • A completed application form (available from Portuguese consulates). Note: You will also need proof of a return airfare (roundtrip ticket) or hotel reservation.
  • The fee is payable in cash or by debit/credit card (currently around $60). This fee is non-refundable and should be paid at the time of application. If applying through a travel agency, the agency may charge an additional commission.
  • Proof that you have enough money for your stay (a bank statement, travelers’ checks, etc.).
  • Once you have gathered the required documents and fees, take them to your nearest Portuguese consulate or embassy for processing. The process can take anywhere from several hours to a few days - be patient! Once everything is settled, you will receive an invitation letter from the consulate or embassy confirming that you have been issued a visa and specifying the dates of your trip. Make sure to bring this letter along with your passport when traveling to Portugal - even if you are using a valid tourist visa waiver issued by another country.
