When planning your trip to Portugal, obtain a visa in advance. To apply for a Portuguese visa, you will need the following:

• A passport valid for at least six months after the proposed date of your stay in Portugal.
• Your passport photo.
• Two copies of your recent passport page with visa stamps, if applicable.
• A completed application form (available from Portuguese consulates). Note: You will also need proof of a return airfare (roundtrip ticket) or hotel reservation.
• The fee is payable in cash or by debit/credit card (currently around $60). This fee is non-refundable and should be paid at the time of application. If applying through a travel agency, the agency may charge an additional commission.
• Proof that you have enough money for your stay (a bank statement, travelers’ checks, etc.).

Once you have gathered the required documents and fees, take them to your nearest Portuguese consulate or embassy for processing. The process can take anywhere from several hours to a few days - be patient! Once everything is settled, you will receive an invitation letter from the consulate or embassy confirming that you have been issued a visa and specifying the dates of your trip. Make sure to bring this letter along with your passport when traveling to Portugal - even if you are using a valid tourist visa waiver issued by another country.
